Spiritual Growth

ESV Classic Reference Bible, Hardcover by Crossway Books & Bibles
The new English Standard Version translation is founded on the belief that the words of the Bible are the very words of God. Setting itself apart from other translations by sacrificing neither accuracy nor readability, the ESV is an "essentially literal" translation that seeks to duplicate the original texts while taking into account the differences between modern English and the original languages.   This is the Bible that I usually read.

Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness by Andrew Murray / Bethany
When Jesus "made himself nothing ... taking the nature of a servant," He modeled for all believers true humility. Murray calls this "our true nobility" and "the distinguishing feature of discipleship." In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray journeys through Scripture and Christ's life, underscoring the utmost need for humility---as opposed to pride---in the Christian's life. With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with His grace. Often called the best work on humility ever written, this edition has been edited for today's reader.  It was after a ladies' class at church that I started to seriously study the topic of humility, which in turn sparked a season radical repentance and revival in my life.  This book was a vital resource in that quest.   I highly recommend any book by Andrew Murray.

The Cross-Centered Life by C.J. Mahaney / Multnomah
Sometimes the most important truths are the easiest to forget. It's time to get back to the starting point of the Christian life - the cross of Christ. Jesus' work on your behalf must be the central motivation for your life and faith - the main thing
Never lay it aside. Never move on," says C.J. Mahaney, who shows you how to center every day around the cross of Calvary and how to escape the pitfalls of legalism, condemnation, and feelings-driven faith.  C.J. Mahaney leads Sovereign Grace Ministries, a dynamic association of churches which is theologically reformed, baptist, and charismatic all rolled into one.   As members of one of these local congregations, we so respect the emphasis on the cross in our lives.  It makes all the difference in the world.

Wonder: Moments That Keep You Falling in Love with Life By Arthur Gordon

In Wonder, celebrated writer Arthur Gordon lifts you out of the ordinary into an exhilarating new awareness of the wonderful world in which we live. Originally published in 1974, these treasured glimpses of life will lift your heart on even the darkest of days.  In these warm, life-affirming stories, Gordon celebrates the beauty hidden in things that usually don't merit a second glance: an epitaph on a headstone in an ancient cemetery, a small boy's first glimpse of shooting stars, and a legacy of love found in the dusty, faded letters of an ancestor. These are just a few of the "endless free gifts that life offers," if we learn to receive them.  Gordon writes, "Almost always there's a lot more to these commonplace happenings than meets the casual eye---and most people would find a lot more in them if only they would pause and look and feel and care just a bit more than they do." You will turn to this beloved book again and again to be reminded that the little things in life are often the most extraordinary.  Arthur Gordon (1912-2002) was an author and a magazine journalist who wrote for Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, Reader's Digest, Ladies Home Journal, and Guideposts.   Another book for those who wish to grow in wonder.

Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands: People in Need of Change, Helping People in Need of Change by Paul David Tripp / P & R Publishing
Intruments in the Redeemer's Hands is a comprehensive treatment in the lives of others, people who themselves are in need of change. In many ways, the church today has more consumers than committed participants. We see church merely as an event we attend or an organization we belong to, rather than as a calling that shapes our entire life. The author explains how his work follows an "all of my people, all of the time model." If you followed the Lord for a thousand years, you would still need the ministry of the body of Christ as much as you did the day you first believed. This need will remain until our sanctification is complete in Glory.   I've been rereading this book lately, and our gracious God is revealing my own heart to me so that I can be healed and then reach out to comfort others with the same comfort he gives me.

The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict by Ken Sande

Peacemaking For Families by Ken Sande with Tom Raabe / Tyndale House
When Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers," he wasn't just talking about Nobel Prize winners. Some of the most important conflict resolution happens at home. Discover Bible-based principles such as "the seven A's of forgiveness" that can change your home from a battle zone to a haven of loving tranquility.

When People Are Big and God Is Small: Overcoming Peer Pressure, Codependency, and the Fear of Man  by Edward T. Welch, Ph.D. / P & R
"In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?" So sings the Psalmist. But quote that to a crime victim or a junior high student and they'll tell you fear of "mortal men" can prove a formidable obstacle! Here Welch offers biblical insight and solutions for a pervasive weakness in today's church. 239 pages.
This is another book on my reread list!
