WHAT IS ON MY BOOKSHELF?
A friend often asks me what I'm reading, and it's always something! I usually have two or three books going at the same time. Lately, I've been devouring The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace. Such good no-nonsense counsel! I recently finished Seeking the Face of God, by Gary Thomas, who is one of my all-time favorite authors, and I'm starting to read it all over again. (I have read several of his books, including my other Gary Thomas favorite, Sacred Marriage.) Another one that I am rereading, since I don't think I finished it the first time, is Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands by Paul David Tripp. It is about life change and lay counseling. Anything by Elisabeth Elliot, Andrew Murray (especially his classic Humility), Emilie Barnes, or Corrie ten Boom is welcome on my shelf, too. I often pick up For the Family's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay, and when I'm in the mood for poetry I always reach for Amy Carmichael's Toward Jerusalem. Of course what I read the most is the Bible! (I use the ESV.) My goal is to read all the way through it this year, and so far I'm on track at the pace of three or four chapters per day. Whether I am reading my Bible or another book, I always have my journal at hand to copy down great quotes and my responses to them. What are you reading?
